    Thanks for showing that camera angle! What separates this from a double black? It looks about as steep as some double blacks I've skied before

    • @kkeelty64
      @kkeelty64 3 роки тому

      A. GoPro doesn't show steepness well. B. Consequences. This is very steep terrain with potentially very bad consequences if you fall. C. Remoteness. If you do injure yourself in Big Couloir, it is going to be difficult for patrol to get to you and will take time to get you off the mountain.

      It's a no fall zone It's definetly like 50 degrees, the only 50 degrree run I've skied is false face and that was also a triple black so it seems like the rating depends on pitch and rock outcrops or walls.

      Big Sky seems to miss the major snowbelt and gets pretty slim some years. Where just a lower latitude below them Grand Targhee and Jackson get very big snow years almost every year. This year is a perfect example.

      @maisymeakin3805 2 роки тому

      From his other videos, it appears that this was from April of 2016. By April the conditions aren’t as good for obvious reasons and this year we didn’t get great snow in general, but I’ve been skiing Big Sky for over 20 years and I promise the snow doesn’t always look like this! 😅

  • @DanceWithGravity
    @DanceWithGravity 4 роки тому

    I thought you both did a pretty good job. That slope looks somewhere between 45 and 50 degrees in steepness, so it's no joke. Based on your camera motion, I think your head was looking directly down the slope, which suggests a quiet upper body. Your "dad" (?) had a little pivot action at the hips in the steeper part (higher up), but he looked a lot better lower down. The snow looked firm yet a little soft. The camera doesn't often give the viewer a true perspective of the steepness, unless the camera is held viewing the slope crosswise, from the side. If I were you, I'd be proud! Back east, there'd be ice and rocks...but most lift-serviced slopes back east aren't this steep, because eastern "powder" (i.e ICE) would be murder at this level of steepness. Still, a nice job!

    IN the first few moments of the video, when I saw you side-slipping down the narrow, icy part, with the fencing on either side, the first thought that I had was, "this was a mistake". Looking at the conditions and skiing in the rest of the video, I think was right. That looked like some very rough, difficult terrain. Thank God you had a guide with you to help you get down that mountain. Great video, and I guess the fact that you posted it means you survived that run! LOL!!!

      I don't know what your talking about man, the traverse over to the big and the snowfield is always like that because it's wind blown and side skidded off, but the snowfield was in fine condition, for sure reccomend a guide either way if it's your first time down the snowfield since it definately takes some route finding into summit direct or anything on the gum wall, overall though it's not like these were amazing conditions, but more no means horrible, or a wrong decision like you said.

      I just went to the ski school and requested Kurt Sundeen. Hes been a guide there for a long time and is a personal friend of mine. If it's on the mountain, he knows how to get to it. Typically guides will assess your skill level but in my case Kurt already knew I could ski it so the assessment portion didnt come into play.

    • @ltkillert92
      @ltkillert92 5 років тому

      It's much narrower at the top, a little steeper, and about as long as marx/lenin. It's similar in pitch to the gullies and similar width to gully 3. You should be fine, especially if you go with a guide. Once you get past the dogleg you're home free.
